4 Things You Need to Know As a Job-searching Student

4 Things You Need to Know As a Job-searching Student4 Things You Need to Know As a Job-searching StudentIn a world of unpaid internships, life after graduation may seem a bit tough for the average job-searching student. The thing is, the skills you pick up in the university are usually not the only thing youll need for career success writing papers and multiple choice tests is all fine and dandy, but that doesnt really predict your success in the workplace. There are, however, some things you can learn which will make the job search much easier. 1. Focus on one job at a timeYoud be excited to hear that (or highly disappointed) when assessing a job-searching student, what the manager looks at is not your GPA. According to data-crunching done by Google, there is absolutely no correlation between a high GPA and workplace success. What they do look at, however, is how invested you are in your search. Whether the student is actually trying his best to get the specific job, or if hes just applying to a bunch of them, and hoping for the best. What this means for you, is to do your research. Before applying to a large company, you might want to find out how things are done there (the easiest way to do this is through GlassDoor.Learn about the company culture, the competition, and about the industry in general. You could check out the companys about us page for the general information, or for the specifics, comments on the company from ex-employees on GlassDoor. In addition, you could also look up the interviews of the founders the mora you know the better. Theres a good chance that the interviewer might ask what aspect of their companys activities excite you the most and why. Even if that doesnt happen, youll still seem more knowledgeable and confident. In addition, rather than going wild and sending your resume to every job opening you find, you could focus on a handful per week. Tailoring your resume and cover letter for each position makes it much more likely to g et you hired. At , for our premium services, we ask our clients to name 3 of their favourite companies, and then tailor the resumes specifically for those. As a result, over 81% of our customers get invited to an interview in either their first or second choice just because we make that extra step of customizing the application for the specific company.2. Impress them with your resumeCrafting a resume is thenightmare for most job-searching students. While a minority of them have somework experience, the majority is stuck with some minor school projects and extracurricular activities. Staring at their blank resume in despair, thinking what else is there to fill besides their education? The answer to that comes off a bit surprising for most most employers arent really expecting a lot of work experience from a job-searching student. What they are looking for is willingness to learn, and for them to actually be a good culture fit for the company. That means that if you can properly sho w your personality through the resume, youre pretty much guaranteed an interview. There are a number of ways to do that, such as mentioning your key strengths, life principles, books that influenced you, etc.Anything goes, theres no set voreingestellt for a resume the only thing that counts is whether this really describes who you are. What you shouldnt do, however, is use fluff words. When you dont have a lot to fill in your resume, there might be a temptation to fill them with generalities, such as Great at critical thinking, open-minded or team-oriented. These words, as you already know, dont really mean anything. The HR also knows that, you know that, and so does literally anyone who looks at your resume. If you do want to include buzzwords, have something to back them up youre good at critical thinking, and youve done x, y, and z, which backs up your claim. In such a case, if you dont get hired, you shouldnt even be disappointed you probably just werent a good culture fit fo r the company, and wouldnt have liked working there anyway.3.Ace the interviewThis part may seem a bit scary for most job-searching students, especially the ones who dont have any previous job experience. Youd be surprised to learn, however, that most interviewers actually ask the same questions. For example, what would you consider your biggest strength and weakness? or even quirkier ones, if you had a choice, what would you pick as a superpower?. For the quirkier questions, you need to provide an even quirkier answer. Maybe mention how you would manipulate the stock market in the past using time travel to become the richest man in the world? Or you could use the power of mind-reading in order to achieve world dominion? Many career advice websites recommend being confident and in charge during an interview. Saying that, however, doesnt help one bit. You dont just grow confidence out of nowhere, right before an interview. Rather, be prepared. Prepare a list of the interview questions that theyre most likely to ask, and prepare set answers for them. Getting to rehearse the answers and the tone with someone you know beforehand can take you a long way. Even if you flunk an interview or two, youll have gained some experience with the process, highly increasing the chances of getting hired.4. Put yourself in the shoes of the employerThe formula for success with the job search is remembering the fact that the employers are people too. Before submitting your resume or cover letter anywhere, try re-reading it from a different perspective. Ask yourself, does this make sense? Is this original and novel? The usual answer for this is no, meaning that you need to do more research. In fact, while doing interviews for a small project, me and a co-worker discovered that out of 15 student, only 2 were decent. The rest of them had either very plain resumes, or cover letters copy pasted from Google. When you realize that most of your peers are as clueless as you, creating a resum e that stands out doesnt seem so hard anymore.Following all the above-mentioned advice may seem a bit hard at first, and it may take some practice to get the hang of everything. After all, reading an article doesnt instantly make you an expert at job-search. However, after an interview or two, youll be wondering how you had difficulties with the process in the first place. And finally, remember that going out of your way to look for advice online, already puts you one step ahead on the path to scoring that sweet sweet internship. We bet on that.Did we miss anything important? Feel free to drop us a line down in the comments below Else, like our Facebook page for your weekly dose of inspiration. Salary Negotiation Tips Requesting an Unusual Benefit

Salary Negotiation Tips Requesting an Unusual BenefitSalary Negotiation Tips Requesting an Unusual BenefitWhen is the best time to ask for a perk that is out of the ordinary?Q After nearly a year of unemployment, I feel fortunate to have started a part-time position as a contracts manager. A former colleague created this opportunity for me with the expectation that I would bring work into the firm that I could then manage. The position is expected to grow into full time employment, but theres no guarantee. There are some things I like about my new job, including the flexibility and easy commute, along with the responsibility and challenge to grow the business. But there are some real red flags, too. Over the last few weeks, Ive been bewerbungsinterviewing with an established aerospace firm, and while nothing is certain, I have a very positive feeling about how the interviews have been going and so far, I like what Ive experienced in the interview process. The aerospace job potentially offers long-term security, opportunity for training, good benefits, and a positive work environment. I think it would be a good opportunity, and if I were still unemployed, Im sure I would have jumped at the chance. I am very interested in pursuing the aerospace job, but would like to negotiate for a somewhat unusual benefit. Can you suggest an appropriate way that I could feel people out about the possibility of bringing my 13-year-old border collie to work when Im at the interview? In my last job, the dog bowl in the break room allowed me to bring up the question. I appreciate any advice you might have for me.A The key pivotal issue for you seems to be can you bring your dog with you to work. You ask can you suggest an appropriate way that I could feel people out about bringing my dog to work when I met the interview?I wouldnt try to put it into the interviewing process. It is an example of a benefit or perk for which you will be negotiating. You dont want to bring up any of thes e elements until the appropriate time. So you should lock in a firm offer, and then go on about the interviewing experience.Bringing a dog to work is certainly a perk to negotiate. But since it is an unusual request, its something the employer will have to consider and discuss amongst themselves. Bringing it up or talking about it as an item of negotiation in the early stages may only put a wrench in the works. You dont want that.So follow the instructions in my book Negotiating Your Salary How to Make $1000 a Minute and postpone a serious discussion about your dog coming to work until you know theres an offer. When you have an offer, thats the time to bring it up. In your case, it seems that you can bring it up with the added incentive that this will actually make the difference between closing a deal or not.As far as working it into the conversation goes, simply say I have an unusual request. Other employers I have worked for have allowed me this benefit. It wont cost the company anything. In fact, if we could arrange for this one benefit, then I am almost certain we have a deal. The request is bringing my dog to work. Youll be able to take it from there Im sure.

These are the Top 50 places to live in the United States in 2018

These are the Top 50 places to live in the United States in 2018These are the Top 50 places to live in the United States in 2018There are lots of ways to compare cities against each other. To name only a few, you could look at average income, expenses, housing prices, crime rates, the quality of schools, traffic, proximity to professional sports teams, weather, politics, job security and racial diversity. The list goes on and on. With so many different factors to consider, a simple list just isnt enough information. We decided to cut through the noise using one of the most popular rankings around Moneys top 50 best places to live in the U.S.Money combed through hundreds of cities and focused on three main categories earning potential, the cost of living and quality of life. Researchersfocusedon racially diverse places with reasonable crime rates and more than 50,000 people. They ranked each city across a variety of different factors, including the weather, high school graduation rates , the length of an average workers commute and the ratio of income to home prices. We wanted to create a simpler visual breaking down the main categories that people care most about, so we concentrated only on zentralwert family income, home prices and projected job growth (2017-2022). The resulting visualization lets you quickly compare different locations depending on what matters most to you.The first piece to consider is the relative size of an average workers paycheck. 30 out of the 50 cities boast median family income levels over $100,000, led by Bethesda, MD at $179,478. To keep that in perspective, median household income across the country sits just under$76,000. Places like Bethesda and Brookline are actually suburbs of much larger u-bahn areas, notably New York City, Boston and Washington, DC. In other words, a key ingredient to high wages is proximity to a competitive job market with lots of employers. But income is only one factor to consider when comparing cities. Home p rices provide another critical angle because housing costs are typically the single biggest expense in any familys budget, and a high salary might not go very far if your mortgage is outrageously expensive. Unfortunately, median home prices for the cities on our list are quite expensive. Brookline, MA tops the charts at an eye-popping $996,550, or about 7 times the median family income for that area. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Rock Hill, SC has the most affordable housing market on our list at just $175,000, roughly 3 times median income. This suggests that workers stand a much better chance totally paying off their mortgages in cities outside the Northeast. In fact, many of the places with the highest median incomes also have the lowest projected job growth. The top 10 highest median incomes have a combined projected job growth rate of 6.5%, compared with the bottom 10 at 8.0%. After all, why would employers dramatically expand payrolls in already crowded markets with work ers expecting high salaries? All of which goes to say that there are lots of factors that go into ranking cities, and in turn, determining the best place to spend ones career. If youre interested in relocating for a job, theres a lot more to think about than just your baseline salary. Consider a variety of different factors instead, and use ourcost of living calculatorto paint a complete picture. This article was originally published on HowMuch.net.

Own Your Natural Talents How to Identify and Embrace Your Strengths

Own Your Natural Talents How to Identify and Embrace Your Strengths We all have natural talents and abilities, but it can be hard to recognize and articulate just what they are.Instead, most people tend to focus on their weaknesses. That may be a natural compulsion, but wouldnt it make more sense to lean into your strengths instead of constantly get hung up on your weaknesses?Imagine youre sitting in a parent-teacher conference and the teacher tells you your child is excelling in English but struggling in math. Immediately, your mind probably starts thinking about how to help your child in improve at math. Sure, everyone needs a certain level of mathematical competency, but its all too easy to overemphasize compensating for weaknesses. As a result, your child could miss out on fully investing in their area of excellence in this case, English.Think about your last performance review. Job Interview Question Tell Me About When Something Went Wrong

Job Interview Question Tell Me About When Something Went WrongJob Interview Question Tell Me About When Something Went WrongRemember that time something went wrong on the job? You probably werent feeling calm and collected, and you definitely werent feeling like you wanted to talk about what happened in great detail. Even if you made a mistake or had to deal with a truly crazy scenario, you can still turn it into a good story for your upcoming job einstellungsgesprch. In fact, you might even be asked to tell the interviewer about a time something went wrong on the job. Heres a two-part strategy for framing your answer to this tough interview question to make sure you give the interviewer the best possible understanding of how you work on the job Explain the situation honestlyDont try to sugarcoat what happened or hedge the story in a way that makes you look like a hero and everyone else look incompetent. Both approaches will make it hard for the interviewer to believe what youre sayi ng, and they may wonder how it played out in real life. Instead, clearly articulate what the problem welches and what part you had in it. Bad story I was working late and did all of my closing tasks 15 minutes before we closed. However, my supervisor was really bad at providing a clear plan of who was supposed to do what during closing. As it turns out, she thought I was going to put the mats down, and I thought she was going to put the mats down. Neither of us did, and a customer slipped and fell on the way out of the store. Everything turned out okay, though, and it wasnt my fault.Good story One night, there was a miscommunication between my supervisor and I as to who would perform certain closing tasks. Unfortunately, as a result a customer was injured when they slipped on a matless floor walking out of the building. My supervisor and I both hurried to assist the customer and make sure everything was okay, and later we sat down to speak honestly about what error occurred and how we could fix it. We havent had any errors like that since, and I learned an important lesson about double-checking information that doesnt sound right to me.Focus on your reaction and the resultsUnless youre very lucky, its normal for bad things happen at work. What distinguishes hirable candidates from unhirable candidates is how they react when something goes wrong and what happens as a result of it.Focus your story on your reaction and the results to express that you know how to handle yourself when unfortunate or questionable things happen. Show that you approach every setback with a willingness to learn and correct your habits. Bad story My assistant and I were planning a wedding and on the day of the event we realized the caterer would be late by 30 minutes. This was going to push back the brides reception, which would throw off the rest of the event and create a problem with the venue. The bride was really upset, but we pulled it off in the end and we saved the relationship.G ood story When my assistant and I realized that the caterer would be 30 minutes late to a wedding on the day of the event, we knew the bride was going to be very upset and that the delay might cause an issue with the venue. I decided to proactively contact the bride and the venue to work out the scheduling change. We brainstormed a photo shoot opportunity to make up the delay in the time, and I negotiated with the venue coordinator so that they wouldnt charge us for the half-hour overage. The client was relieved, and the event went well despite this hitch in the plans. In the working world nothing goes as planned. Fortunately, you can use questions like these to show off your ability to keep your cool under pressure and continuously improve your wertmiger zuwachs on the job.

Youll be creative at work only with permission, time, and freedom to do so

Youll be creative at work only with permission, time, and freedom to do soYoull be creative at work only with permission, time, and freedom to do soPermission, time, and freedom. A new Gallup study of 16,500 employees called, Fostering Creativity at Work found that those were the three things needed to encourage creativity in the workplace.Yet far too often, theyre just ideas.Only 29% of employees strongly agreed that they were expected to be creative or come up with new solutions at work, with 32% just agreeing.Creativity requires time, which not all workers have. While 30% say theyve been given time to think creatively on the job or talk about new ideas daily, 35% say they only have time to be creative a few times a year, less, or not at all.Creativity at work is risky its a time-consuming exercise that can lead to new products or it can lead to nothing at all. Perhaps because of this risk, only 18% of employees strongly agree that they can take risks at work that could lead to m ajor new products or solutions. When employees are given expectations and time to be creative, they are more confident in taking an innovative approach to important problems, products or services, the study concluded after analysis of their data. When tinkering with the elements permission, time, and freedom to take risks and be creative to see what effect that had on data, researchers noticed interesting results. For example, less that two in 10 employees strongly agreed that they could take risks and be creative but when all three elements of permission, time, and freedom to take risks were in place, that number went up to seven in 10.Its up to management to redesign their organization and culture if they want to get to that seven out of 10, however. Employees can only innovate when theyre supported by their employer, and when they feel its possible and safe to do so.Heres something to get your creative juices going all on your own.

The one-line email that will radically improve your groups culture

The one-line email that will radically improve yur groups cultureThe one-line email that will radically improve your groups cultureSuccessful leaders create buy-in by flooding their groups with belonging cues.Daniel Coyleis theNew York Timesbestselling author ofThe Talent Code,The Secret Race, and, most recently,The Culture Code The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups. WhenThe Culture Codebecame an official selection for the first season of theNext Big Idea Club, Daniel stopped by to offeran exclusive set of insights, the first of which were proud to share below. We think about belonging and safety as this thing that sort of happens by magic- it either happens, or it doesnt. But the truth is that relationships have a physics behind them. Successful leaders create buy-in by flooding their groups with belonging cues- these simple, clear signals that tell our brains that were connected, that we share a future.I want to tell you about a group named Wipro, a big company that had a big prob lem. The problem was that people kept leaving. They were a call center, and they would lose about half of their workers every year. So Wipro decided to do a crazy little experiment. They had two groups of new hires. One of them got the standard training, in which theyd meet a star performer and learn about why Wipro is a good place to work. With this second experimental group, instead of just telling them about the company, they also asked the employees about themselves. Simple questions What happens on your best day? What happens on your worst day? They asked them, If we were on this desert island and everyone was trying to survive, what special skills would you bring to that survival? That was it, a simple exchange for one hour. And then they waited to see if that made any difference on retention.Seven months later, they found out it had a massive impact 270% improvement in retention. Why? Because of the signal that was sent in one hour. Safety gets delivered in small moments that send a signal of, We are connected. I care about you. Im listening. Im curious about who you are. Sending that small signal at the right time can make a massive difference in how connected your people feel. Here are a few ways to do that. Number one actively, relentlessly signal your connection. Smart leaders make members of a group feel connected by capitalizing on micro-opportunities to send this clear, unmistakable signal of, I see you. I care about what you have to say. In particular, focus on the first five seconds. The start of any interaction is when our brains decide whether were in or out, so take full advantage of that moment with your body language, with your facial expression, and with your attention.Number two, embrace the messenger. The moment bad news arrives is the moment when group safety and belonging can evaporate. So, leaders, dont just tolerate bad news embrace that moment. Signal to your group that its safe to tell the truth.Number three, the one-line email. If you want to send a quick signal of safety and connection, send this note to your gruppe Please tell me one thing youd like me to do more of, and one thing youd like me to do less of. It takes a few seconds, but it sends a powerful signal of safety and openness and encourages others to do the same.Ready for more insights fromThe Culture Code?Join the Next Big Idea Club todayThis article first appeared on Heleo.
